Let’s face it. We all want to get in shape for the new year. However, with so many fad diets and fitness programs out their, many of us don’t know where to start. The process for getting into shape is pretty straightforward and relatively easy, we just like to over complicate it. In this article, I’m going to be breaking down the three ways to guarantee that you get in shape and stay in shape in the long run. Let’s get started.
Diet is by far the most important factor when trying to get into shape. If you’re killing it in the gym but not giving your body the food it needs to rebuild itself, you’re not going to get in shape. Start by finding out how many calories your body needs every day to maintain your current body weight. If your goal is to lose weight, drop that caloric intake by 300-500 calories per day. If you want to gain weight, consume 300-500 extra calories per day. Track your progress by weighing yourself every morning and then average the seven weights you got at the end of the week. This will give you your most accurate weight. Also, focus on clean, nutritionally dense foods rather than junk food. This is common sense but many people overlook it.
2. Workout routine
The second most important step is to make sure you have a strong workout routine that fits your fitness goals. If you want to build muscle, your primary lifts should consist of compound movements that incorporate multiple muscle groups. If weight loss is your goal, focus on high intensity cardio as this will burn fat and maintain muscle. The goal in the gym is to find a balance. Train hard but do not overtrain. A good rule of thumb is to train 45 minutes to an hour every workout. This routine will make sure you’re not undertraining nor overtraining either. It will maximize the effectiveness of your workout, ultimately leading to better results.
With many of us being busy throughout the day, we often don’t view sleep as a priority. However, when it comes to training and getting in shape, this is not what you want to do. Getting a good night’s sleep allows your body to rebuild and your hormones to balance, two important things when getting into shape. In the end, get no less than six hours of sleep a night and develop a consistent sleeping schedule. In the end, these three things combined will allow you to get the body you’ve always wanted.
