International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam

The focus of Mariam Global Health’s ventures is on biotechnology, and it has been able to help several people within and outside of the United States. One example is the International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam or IPSAC-VN.

IPSAC-VN is a non-profit organization that does extremely important work. Dr. Mark Holterman learned that the people of Vietnam did not have adequate medical facilities to treat the country’s children. That’s why IPSAC-VN formed a partnership with specialists in Vietnam so that medical personnel could receive the education and materials that are lacking. The organization also provides surgical services when it is necessary.

IPSAC-VN also runs an international scholarship program. The IPSAC Vietnam Scholarship Program targets physicians, nurses and medical practitioners. Individuals chosen to partake in this program receive a scholarship to study at an ACGME-accredited educational institution in the United States. Winners have the opportunity to take advantage of several different options, including different types of training and the ability to be involved in research and clinical practices. This program is not a one-size-fits-all type of project. Each one is individually tailored to fit the specific needs of each recipient.

In order to be a volunteer with IPSAC-VN, an individual must have a current medical license. Then, he or she will be able to assist the medical staff in Vietnam with patients as well as advance the education of the doctors who are currently practicing there. They can also offer their services as surgeons.

Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is an area where Dr. Mark Holterman has studied over the years, and he has written several articles on the subject. One reason that Dr. Holterman is such a huge advocate for stem cell research, is because stem cell research is the remedy for treating a wide range of illnesses. For example, cellular therapies have shown great promise in combating orthopedic injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular illnesses.

Dr. Holterman has found in his research that blood vessel tissue that exists around the heart can be repaired and grown if it is stimulated by cellular therapies. This makes it possible to relieve patients of the suffering experienced from neurodegenerative diseases. According to the research, adult stem cells may be used to fight diabetes and autoimmune diseases as well.

Dr. Holterman has also discovered that wounds can heal at an accelerated rate with stem cell therapy. In addition, stem cell therapy also causes the body to increase the production of collagen. This is very positive because collagen fortifies the skin and encourages the replacement of dead skin cells. With more collagen, the damaged area receives healthy tissue, and it doesn’t have the tendency to scar as badly.

Stem cell therapy even helps organ transplant patients have better outcomes. If the patient desires, cells from one area of the body can be transplanted to another area, and this lowers the chance of organ rejection.

The Advancement of Cellular Therapies

Dr. Mark Holterman is a co-founder of the Alliance for the Advancement of Cellular Therapies or AACT. He is currently on the board of this non-profit organization. It seeks to bring researchers, medical device manufacturers, scientists and physicians into the same room so that regenerative medicine and cell therapy can move forward. Because all of these people can work together, the AACT will be able to create instructions for the best practices and clinical translations in regenerative medicine.

Members of the AACT receive enormous benefits. Whenever these professionals want to attend a conference or a workshop, they receive a discount on the price. They also learn the latest news in regenerative medicine from the newsletter that the organization sends them. They have the opportunity to meet and work with others in their field. As members, they form a collective voice that speaks to the European Medicine Agency and the Food and Drug Administration.
